Philadelphia Ghost Sign Project

Lawrence Otoole’s Philadelphia Ghost Sign Project is a visual record of ghost signs and faded advertisements in and around the greater Philadelphia area. To me, one of the coolest aspects of the city’s history. Some of the chosen word combinations are interesting, “Coke, Coal, Fuel, Oil”, “Money, Luggage, Clothing, Watches, Diamonds”…

Awesome… I was at some huge mall in North Carolina recently, and they had fake “ghost signs” painted on parts of the exterior, in order to give an air of “history” or something. And they weren’t even signs or ads for real companies, just made up stuff like “Bobby’s Vegetable Stand” or whatever.

Do you know where the second image is located? I would love to find an old image when it was fresh paint

I can’t get enough of ghost signs! The second one is at 13th and Snyder, but I looked on PhillyHistory.org and couldn’t find an original photo.

I’m embarrassed to say it, but I just came across this, almost 2 years later… Thanks so much for the post!
